This new generation.
Overheard on the F train yesterday. I’m terrible about guessing these things, but I’d be willing to wager money that these were a couple of NYU kids. They were either dating or doing whatever it is kids do today where they fuck when they get drunk and then pretend it’s all cool. The boy was for sure the professorial type; you could see him lecturing his friends about pretty much anything. Kind of like me at that age. What a dick. Anyway:
GIRL: So what does he mean, the first war president to come into office in forty years?
BOY: Well, we haven’t had a new president inaugurated during wartime since Nixon followed Johnson in 1969. And you know what happened in 1969, right?
GIRL: [Pauses for a second] Uh, Bryan Adams got his first real six-string?
The boy looked at her in this mixture of shock and pity, but if we hadn’t just come to my stop I’m pretty sure I would have run over and given her a hug.
