From Gawker Media’s monthly editorial newsletter:

GAWKER ON LANGUAGE, FOUL LANGUAGE

From ass-fucking to Balk’s Cock, risque writing is a hallmark of Gawker blogs - even though it means we sometimes don’t get linked to from mainstream news outlets as a result. But I’ve noticed a lot of unnecessarily foul language appearing in headlines and articles lately. As a general rule, headlines should refrain from using any words that are forbidden on network TV at night. There aren’t many restrictions in the text itself; that being said, instead of a hard and fast rule, writers should try to avoid over-the-top swearing. When swearing is used, it should be treated the same way we treat sex and drugs – casually and matter-of-factly. Profanity is best used as a description, not as a metaphor. Writing about ass-fucking is okay when there IS ass fucking, but the hackneyed “blowjob” to describe an overly-friendly article in the newspaper is to be avoided.
Sadly, this is actually the kind of thing I am now forced to tell the people I work with. Especially this week, because Choire keeps trying to sneak the word “cuntjammer” into his headlines.
