Can we please just have the election already?

New Yorkers may remember (or not: it was boring as fuck then and it’s boring as fuck now) the 2001 Democratic mayoral primary. After an incredibly bitter race, Mark Green defeated Freddy Ferrer for the nomination. Ferrer sulked and bitched and acted in such a way that Green (a man who brought new meaning to Enoch Powell’s adage that all political careers end in failure by also beginning his political career in failure) lost an extremely close contest to Michael Bloomberg, in part because of 9/11, but also in part because of the damage Ferrer did to him. How did the Democratic party deal with a man who helped to keep them out of Gracie Mansion after eight long years? The next time around they put him on top of the ticket.

Just a thought here: If Hillary Clinton really is trying to wound Obama so badly that he loses and gives her a clear shot for the nomination in 2012—and I’m not sure that she is; I think she’s smart enough to know that, Ferrer parallels aside, this is it for her—she’s going to need to throttle it down a bit. Because Obama is floundering badly right now. Couple more weeks like this and the superdelegates may decide that he doesn’t have a chance. And what happens then? Well, there’s no way they’re going to give it to Clinton; she’s done too much to divide the party at this point. Should this scenario play out, pay close attention come convention time: If the Clinton people start leaking damaging stories about Al Gore, then we’ll know she’s looking ahead.
